Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, Killeen ISD will implement the SMART Tag™ bus safety system, providing families with real-time transportation updates and an additional layer of safety for students who ride district buses.
Students will scan their school ID badge when boarding and exiting the bus, allowing transportation staff to verify ridership, help ensure students are on the correct bus and provide families with real-time updates through the SMART Tag™ Parent App. The badges do not store personal information.
"Student safety is at the center of every decision we make in Transportation Services," said Myron Wilson, executive director of Transportation. "SMART Tag gives us another tool to help ensure students get where they need to be safely while providing families with greater visibility and peace of mind. We believe strong communication with parents is an important part of creating a positive transportation experience for students."
Families can download the SMART Tag™ Parent App through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Features include real-time bus ride updates, student boarding and drop-off notifications, bus location information, student transportation history and improved communication with the Transportation Department.
The SMART Tag™ system is designed to help Killeen ISD provide a safer and more connected transportation experience for students and families.
